Jakarta (TAN): The Indonesian government recently announced the names of 10 provinces that could be promoted as halal tourism destinations, Tempo.co reported.

The capital city’s coordinator of the Halal Tourism Development Acceleration Team Riyanto Sofyan said halal tourism destinations did not strictly have to be associated with a particular religious factor. Adequate availability of prayer facilities qualifies a destination to be in the club.

Apart from Jakarta, the other nine provinces declared suitable for halal tourism are Aceh, Riau Islands, West Sumatra, Central Java, West Java, East Java, Yogyakarta, West Nusa Tenggara, and South Sulawesi.

Sofyan said of all the 10 destinations, Jakarta was unique because it had the infrastructure to promote urban halal tourism.

“Jakarta is the country’s capital, every infrastructure is well-developed, both general or halal,” he said, adding that the city administration could organise an event related to halal lifestyle to promote halal tourism. This would be in the form of a Halal Tourism Expo.
