Vancouver (TAN): The upcoming Full Circle’s Talking Stick Festival (February 17-March 2, 2019) in various locations of this west Canadian capital celebrates indigenous art.

The festival, now in its 17th year, looks to attract indigenous and non-indigenous attendees alike. “Our programming focuses on the diversity of Visual Arts, Dance, Theatre, Music, Pow Wow and Film in both traditional and contemporary formats,” the Full Circle website says.

The theme of the Talking Stick Festival this year is Schayilhen (S-ch-eye-yay-lh-un), which translates literally to “Salmon going up”. Figuratively, it means salmon going up the stream to spawn and to sacrifice them for human beings to eat.

The organisers are a non-profit society that believes in rooting art back into the community, where it was traditionally and where it is intended to be. Through creating opportunities for Aboriginal artists to express their life experiences and engage with audiences of all ages and backgrounds, the organisers share these values with as wide scope as possible so that “people of all races and ages have a better understanding of First Nations, Metis and Inuit culture”.
