Brisbane (TAN): Malaysia-based airline AirAsia’s long-haul affiliate Thai AirAsia X will launch services between Thailand’s capital Bangkok and Brisbane, Australia from June 25 this year.

Thai AirAsia X will operate to Brisbane from Bangkok’s Don Mueang International Airport four times a week, marking the brand’s first-ever services to the Queensland capital.

“Queensland became AirAsia’s home in Australia when the first AirAsia X flight touched down on the Gold Coast in November 2007. Since that time, we’ve carried more than 2 million passengers to and from the sunshine state,” AirAsia X Group CEO Nadda Buranasiri said.

AirAsia claimed that the new route would “bring around 25,000 visitors per year to Brisbane”, and give Queenslanders an opportunity to explore Bangkok and the surrounding island destinations.

“This new route to Brisbane will not only increase traffic between Thailand and Queensland, but importantly provide guests with a low-cost option to explore Bangkok and the more than 130 destinations found in AirAsia’s network,” he added.

Brisbane Airport Corporation CEO Gert-Jan de Graaff said Thailand as a destination is “underserved” from Brisbane, and that low-fare flight options could be helpful for flyers.

“With Brisbane’s new runway opening in 18 short months, the decision by AirAsia to bring its first-ever aircraft from the low-cost hub, Don Muang International Airport in Bangkok to Brisbane was a prudent move,” he said.

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said: “Over the past year Queensland welcomed 19,000 travellers from Thailand who spent USD 44 million. We expect to welcome more Thai visitors travelling on this route allowing us to grow this base.”

According to the schedule, flights XJ310 from Bangkok will depart on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 2340 hours, and reach Brisbane the next day at 1135 hours, local time. The return flights XJ311 will leave Brisbane on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 1250 hours, and arrive Bangkok at 1910 hours, local time.

AirAsia is offering special fares as an inaugural deal starting at AUD 239.
