Bangkok (TAN): Thailand-based luxury boutique hotel chain Akaryn Hotel Group plans to become a single-use plastic free hotel company by June 2019, media reports said.
akyra TAS Sukhumvit Bangkok, the group’s latest addition reportedly became the first new hotel in Asia to start without any single-use plastic in its rooms or food and beverage outlets.
While akyra Manor Chiang Mai achieved the goal of becoming single-use plastic free last October, all other Aleenta and akyra hotels under the group aim to eventually be free of single-use plastic.

“Our eco-friendly approach began by sourcing glass bottles and containers, as part of a commitment to use no single-use plastic in our restaurants or bars,” Akaryn Hotel Group’s founder and managing director Anchalika Kijkanakorn was quoted by media reports as saying.
“Our hotels are now extending the initiative by presenting guests with stylish stainless-steel water bottles upon arrival, which they can refill and use at any time during their stay,” she continued.
“Consumers are now actively seeking out responsible businesses that take care of our planet. We are proud to have been such a company since we first began operating some 16 years ago,” Kijkanakorn added.

The group also promotes the importance of using locally made products. While the hotels use locally manufactured celadon pottery containers for its bathroom amenities and essential oils, chefs from akyra Manor Ching Mai have designed a menu with locally sourced goods.
Aleenta Hua Hin Resort & Spa uses ingredients grown at its own organic farm, and sources products from within 30 kilometers of the resort to reduce its carbon footprint. They also promote locally made handicrafts made with natural materials, and cares for indigenous plants.

Akaryn Group hosts community outreach projects to increase environmental awareness among travellers and children. They organise group activities such as cleaning local beaches, planting organic vegetables, and educating local children about the consequences of using plastic, importance of natural fertilisers and sustainable agricultural methods.
