Lhasa (TAN): Nearly 1.4 million people visited Tibet in the first three months of 2019, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported. This is a 30 per cent increase over the corresponding period the previous year.

Tibet is an autonomously-governed region within China.

The report, citing regional tourism department figures, said bulk of the tourists were Chinese.

January to March tourism generated revenue amounting to USD 230 million, up by 22.3 per cent from the corresponding period in 2018.

Independent travel is not allowed in Tibet and most international tourists need a Tibetan Tourist Bureau permit in addition to a Chinese visa.

All visitors need to travel in tour groups. This is the reason for the small percentage of foreign visitors.
