Seven passengers were reportedly sent to the hospital for assessment after the strong smell made them ill.

United Airlines told passengers that the aircraft, a Boeing 737, was in need of “prolonged ventilation system maintenance”, CNN quoted a passenger as saying.

The passenger reportedly said they noticed “a faint smell of fuel” before taking off, which eventually became “very strong”.

Last month, several passengers and crew members of a Seattle-bound Alaska Airlines flight from Chicago were treated for respiratory issues triggered by a “sweet burning smell”.
