Cleveland (TAN): A village by Lake Erie, situated less than 50km from here in northwest US’ Ohio state, is making its mark on the tourism map since the opening of several beachfront houses.

For holidays at Lake Erie, tourists usually think of Catawba and Marblehead, apart from the islands.

Speaking to Cleveland.com, Karen Volzer, 60, who rents out seven beachfront houses, said: “There’s really not much to do, other than the beach… That’s part of the charm. We have fabulous sunsets. It’s a place to go and relax.”

Tourism trends around the world show an increasing number of people opt for off beat destinations that are not considered “touristy”. For short holidays, many prefer to just go somewhere and relax instead of indulging in many activities.

The village of Fairport Harbor has a lakefront park with a wide beach, a couple of museums and two lighthouses.

It’s a relatively quiet place without loud tourists. “There’s not drunk naked people jumping off their boats,” says Volzer.

Fairport Harbor, with its motto “Life is better in a beach town”, wants to encourage tourism.

“If you talk to people from Fairport Harbor, it’s so funny, they can’t imagine people would come there and vacation,” Volzer said.
