Chennai (TAN): One of southern India’s popular tourist destinations Ooty in Tamil Nadu state will usher in the nation’s 73rd Independence Day in a unique way. The city has put a ban on single-use plastic products starting from August 15, reports said.
The hill station decided to go plastic free after the Nilgiri District Administration banned the sale of single-use plastics comprising water bottles, food items packed in plastic, and soft drink containers along the highways going into the district’s major towns.

Meanwhile, the Nilgiri District Administration barred the use of plastic following a Madras High Court order that instructed the Collector to put an end to the entry of all types of plastic into the district.
Visitors heading to Ooty August 15 onwards could take along recyclable containers for food and beverage. Nevertheless, RO water stations will reportedly be installed at touristy areas and along highways leading to the city.
The southern Indian town will soon join the bandwagon of cities and destinations across the globe that are constantly looking for ways to contain plastic waste for a sustainable future.
