Lebanon’s capital is known for its excellent museums and East-meets-West vibe that attracts visitors.
Buildings were damaged and window glass splintered kilometres away from the where the blast took place due to its powerful nature. The Beirut blast destroyed much of the city’s port.
Media reports cited Lebanon’s Interior Minister Mohammed Fahmi as telling a local TV channel that the blast appeared to have been caused by the detonation of more than 2,700 tonnes of ammonium nitrate that had been stored in a warehouse at the dock. It is not immediately clear what caused the detonation.
