(TAN): The Eastern & Oriental Express, A Belmond Train, is resuming operations in February 2024 after a long break, bringing back a luxurious rail journey across Southeast Asia. The train will introduce two new seasonal trips departing from Singapore and travelling through Malaysia’s changing landscapes and vibrant cities: the Essence of Malaysia (November to February) and Wild Malaysia (March to October).

The train’s 15 dark green carriages will depart from Singapore’s Woodlands station, stopping at destinations like Penang, Langkawi, and for the first time, the Taman Negara National Park, before returning to Singapore.

The train’s interior has been updated, and the experiences onboard elevated, offering journeys that encompass culture, gastronomy, architecture, and the arts. The Eastern & Oriental Express aims to set a new standard for railway travel in Southeast Asia.

The Essence of Malaysia journey spans three nights, taking travellers from Singapore through Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, and ending on Penang. Guests will have the opportunity to disembark in Alor Setar and take a private cruise to Langkawi. A highlight is the chance to go snorkeling in Langkawi’s Pulau Payar Marine Park.

The Wild Malaysia itinerary is a new addition, covering the untouched areas around the ‘Jungle Railway’ and including a visit to the Taman Negara National Park. The journey is designed in collaboration with Save Wild Tigers and offers a mix of relaxation on the train and adventure in the rainforest. Activities range from learning about tiger conservation to photography and foraging experiences.

The train journey itself immerses guests in Southeast Asian culture through encounters with local artisans and characters. Evenings are filled with Nanyang jazz and Malay tunes. The culinary offerings are rooted in Peranakan culture, a blend of Chinese, Malay, and Southeast Asian influences.

The Eastern & Oriental Express returns with 15 refurbished carriages, including sleeping cars, restaurant cars, a Piano Bar Car, and the iconic open-air Observation Car. The design features elements like marquetry, Malaysian embroidery, and oriental silks, creating a sense of contemporary grandeur.

The train’s cabins come in three categories — Pullman, State, and Presidential — each reflecting a different inspiration. Pullman cabins are influenced by Kuala Lumpur’s radiance, State cabins mirror Penang’s marine surroundings, while Presidential cabins showcase regional opulence.
