Kolkata (TAN): Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport on Saturday morning reopened for flight operations after remaining closed since 1500 hours on Friday with the cyclonic storm Fani heading its way.

The storm, had entered West Bengal, of which Kolkata is capital, shortly after midnight.

Fani has since reduced in intensity and largely gave Kolkata, which had been bracing for it since Friday evening, a miss. The West Bengal capital only experienced sustained drizzle with occasional burst of showers and moderate winds. The eye of the storm is now in Bangladesh.

Fani, which had initially been classified as “extremely severe cyclonic storm”, is the biggest storm in the region since the 1999 super cyclone that left 10,000 dead in Odisha. Fani saw wind speeds as high as 180 kmph after it made landfall in Odisha on Friday.

More than a million people were evacuated from coastal areas to temporary shelters in Odisha.
