Mexico City (TAN): Hospitality major Marriott International’s premium brand Renaissance Hotels has entered the Caribbean with Renaissance Cancún Resort & Marina in Cancún, Mexico.
The brand’s first project in Mexico which Marriott describes as a ‘lifestyle resort’, features 180 rooms including 11 suites, a golf course designed by Tom Weiskopf, restaurants, movie theatres, a shopping centre, and the largest marina in the area.
George Fleck, Vice President of Global Brand Marketing & Management, Renaissance Hotels said: “We have been on a journey to evolve our hotels’ design to reflect what the Renaissance brand offers today: a sense of clever theatricality and an open invitation to experience something a little unexpected during our guests’ travels.”
“We are thrilled to celebrate Renaissance Cancún Resort & Marina and its spontaneous high-low design that embraces the DNA of the locale and gives guests a new sense of the destination,” he added.
The hotel’s design, inspired by the Mayan tradition of the soul’s journey to the mystical underworld ‘Xibalbá’, is highlighted by elements such as a wooden sculpture representing ‘ceiba’, the sacred Mayan tree, and underground art created by local urban artists.

Commenting on the property’s ‘whimsical’ design, General Manager Karina Zuñiga said: “Just as the Mayan underworld is a universe worth discovering, Renaissance Cancún Resort & Marina is a space full of stories waiting to be told. Stories that will awake the explorer within us, when we allow ourselves to be inspired by the unexpected.”
In terms of dining, guests can pick Chef Jair Tellez-led restaurant ‘Merotoro’ to sample the cuisine of Baja California, Mexico, or the Káajal Restaurant for a taste of the local fare. Nüup Deli Café and the flagship Zek Bar, helmed by a DJ, can also turn out to be nice places for a drink or two.
Located in Puerto Cancún, the property is less than half an hour’s drive from Cancun International Airport, and ten minutes from the city centre.
