(TAN): A devastating tornado ravaged Jefferson City, the capital of Missouri state in the US, in the early hours of Thursday.
Named after the third American President Thomas Jefferson, the city is known for the majestic Missouri State Capitol.
Late on Wednesday, the The National Weather Service in St. Louis tweeted: “1147 pm – Jefferson City MO – Violent tornado confirmed – shelter now! #midmowx.”

Pictures and video on social show massive damage across the town with broken trees and power lines strewn across the roads. Missouri governor Mike Parson has asked non-essential state government employees to stay at home on Thursday.
Jefferson City is home to historic landmarks, vibrant art and dinner theatres, shopping centres and great outdoors that offer varied opportunities to tourists.
“Jefferson City’s history can be studied through various works of art showcased throughout the city. The Missouri State Capitol boasts some of the finest collections including the famous Thomas Hart Benton murals in the House Lounge and Three Point Perspective paintings scattered in the hallways. Local galleries aim to inspire artistic expression with exhibits,” Visit Jefferson City says on its web portal.

“Visit the Missouri State Penitentiary Museum to see original artwork and paintings by talented inmates, then take a tour of the decommissioned prison for a glimpse of the penitentiary’s grisly past. Catch a classic at downtown’s intimate cinema or spend summer nights dancing in the streets or watching flicks on the capitol lawn,” it adds.
