CEO and owner at Sherman Associates George Sherman said: “Canopy by Hilton adds vibrancy to the fabric of East Town and the Mill District. The shared vision of Canopy by Hilton and DLR delivers a spectacular Minneapolis experience.”
“We were driven to capture the spirit and history of Minneapolis, and we are honored to celebrate it with guests, residents and businesses downtown,” he added.
Located in the city’s East Town, the Canopy by Hilton Minneapolis Mill District building earlier belonged to the Advance Thresher/Emerson-Newton Implement Company. The 1900s structure, sitting right in the centre of the Mill District, has been refurbished into the Canopy by Hilton hotel.

“The original structure is an example of the kind of large-scale commercial and industrial buildings that were being constructed around the turn-of-the-century. Converting it has really been a labor of love. The resulting design is one that both preserves the building’s heritage and offers guests a truly modern, energizing atmosphere in the heart of downtown Minneapolis,” said DLR Group Principal Ed Wilms, AIA, who leads the firm’s Hospitality Studio in Minneapolis.
The 183-room hotel has been designed in a style so that the exterior features brick and terracotta detailing while the interior boasts exposed wood ceilings and lets in ample sunlight.
Guests can choose their favourite bites from the hotel’s restaurant, sweat it out at the fitness centre, gather at one of the event spaces, or head out for a tour in a complimentary Canopy bike.
“We are thrilled to introduce Canopy to the bustling Minneapolis Mill District. We look forward to delivering a positively local stay to our guests in a neighborhood that offers endless dining, shopping and entertainment options to further position Canopy as a natural choice for those looking for a comfortable stay in the Mill District area,” said Gary Steffen, global head, Canopy by Hilton.
