Venice (TAN): The administration has said cruise ships may no longer pass through the busy Giudecca canal in Venice and is in the process to open a new route after a cruise liner rammed into a tourist boat on Sunday morning injuring five.
Dramatic videos on social media show the cruise ship, MSC Opera, which reportedly experienced engine failure, scrapping the dockside and ramming into the tourist boat with its sirens blaring. People on the dock are seeing running away from the advancing ship.
Italy’s transport minister Danilo Toninelli said the incident shows why big ships couldn’t pass through the Giudecca canal any longer. He said the administration was close to making an alternative route operational that could be a solution to protect both the lagoon and tourism.
“We ask immediately for the opening of Vittorio Emanuele,” Venice mayor Luigi Brugnaro said referring to an alternative route.
