Jakarta, (TAN): After a recent meeting with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), the government of Indonesia has decided to focus, among other things, on sustainable tourism in small villages across the sprawling archipelago.
Indonesia tourism minister Arief Yahya said the ministry intended to create 2,000 tourism villages by the end of 2019.
Indonesia has 75,000 villages spread across the country.
UNWTO guidelines released in 2005 stipulate that sustainable tourism take full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impact while addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, environment and host community.
With this in mind, the Indonesian government wants to make sure that sustainable tourism empower local communities, preserve culture and conserve the environment.
Yahya added that 10,000 environment-friendly village homestays would be made available by the end of 2019.
Corporate social responsibility programmes of government-owned enterprises would fund the development of the homestays and villages.
