Venice (TAN): Visitors to Venice will soon have to pay EUR10 as tourism tax even if they are on a day trip there, said media reports.

This comes months after the city authorities decided to make certain parts of the city inaccessible to tourists.

The idea behind this this is to pass on the benefits of tourism to the local economy. The tax is primarily being implemented with day-trippers in mind who contribute to the city’s overcrowding but do not usually spend in terms of hotel and restaurant costs.

Venice is one of the most-visited cities on the planet.

Announcing this on his Twitter page, Venice mayor said the tax money will used to manage crowds and keep the streets clean.
