Canberra, Australia ropes in tennis star to help revive tourism sector post bushfires

(TAN): Canberra’s tourism sector has roped in Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios to be part of a campaign that aims to restore the city’s tourism after the bushfires, reports said.

Kyrgios will reportedly join the #holidayhereCBR campaign in an effort to urge visitors to travel to the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) of which Canberra, the country’s capital, is a part.

Australia government’s marketing agency, Visit Canberra, decided to introduce the tennis star after Australia’s tourism and hospitality sector received a massive blow in the wake of the bushfires that damaged parts of the country for months, as per reports.

Apart from Kyrgios, the ACT government is bringing in several other celebrities to participate in the campaign to send out the message that the city is open for business, according to reports.

Kyrgios will reportedly not be paid for promoting the message.

“One of the best ways to support bushfire recovery is to spend money in businesses in need, especially small business. Travel to a bushfire affected area, stay the night and spend something in a local business. My home town Canberra is an example of a city that has been affected. It is a great place to visit too! Let’s rebuild together,” he posted on social media.

As per reports, Kyrgios spoke emotionally about the bushfires during the Australian Open 2020, and was part of the bushfire initiatives at Melbourne. He also encouraged his 580,000 social media followers to visit Canberra.

“We were thrilled that Nick Kyrgios generously supported the campaign as a proud and long-time Canberran. A number of other passionate Canberrans are getting behind the campaign,” a government spokeswoman was quoted by Essentially Sports as saying.

Tourism Australia recently launched a new domestic tourism campaign, ‘Holiday Here This Year’, encouraging citizens to support the areas affected by the bushfires by booking and travelling within the country, reports said. The AUD 20 million (USD 13.47 million approximately) campaign was rolled out after the government announced a AUD 76 million bushfire recovery grant, as per reports.
