The Klondike Gold Rush was the event based on which Charlie Chaplin made his 1925 film The Gold Rush.
Gold was first discovered in the area by Skookum Jim and Tagish (Dawson) Charlie of the Tagish First Nations, along with Kate and George Carmack, in 1896 and this kicked off the Klondike Goldrush. Dawson City, which was no more than a swamp that was frequently flooded by the Dawson river, soon turned into the biggest city north of Chicago with 100,000 people heading there to find gold.
