Helsinki (TAN): Finnair operated its first flights powered by biofuel earlier this month as part of the airline’s ‘Push for change’ initiative. The initiative aims to cut down on Finnair’s carbon footprint.

Biofuel, a sustainable form of fuel, is produced from used cooking oil in California state, and does not have a clash with industries such as food production and agriculture.

The two biofuel flights that flew from San Francisco, United States to Finland’s capital Helsinki, had a biofuel mix of 12% which reduced the total carbon dioxide emissions for the flights by around 32 tons.

“The launch of our Push for Change initiative was an important step for Finnair in order to provide our customers with the opportunity to conveniently offset or decrease the emissions from their travel,” Senior Vice President, Communications & Corporate Responsibility, Finnair, Arja Suominen said.

“We have been pleased with the early phases of the initiative so far and we are now excited to move forward and fly our two first biofuel flights supported entirely by the Push for change contributions. We naturally hope that customers will be increasingly willing and interested in using the service in the future as well,” she added.

While Netherlands-based sustainable aviation fuel company SkyNRG and Boston-based biodiesel supplier World Energy are Finnair’s partners in San Francisco, aviation fuel and lubricant supplier Shell Aviation handled the project’s logistics and supply chain.
