Venice (TAN): Two German backpackers were fined and ordered to leave the city for making coffee on the steps of the Rialto bridge.

Photographs issued by the authorities show the man and the woman sitting by the water and preparing coffee before the police arrived. 

Reports said the two, both in their 30s, were fined a total of EUR 950 and asked to leave the city.

The current laws enable local residents to report tourists picnicking, washing in the fountains, swimming in the canals or walking around bare-chested or in bikinis at the Unesco world heritage site.

Venice mayor Luigi Brugnaro tweeted about the “rude people” who were fined and ordered out of the city.

Venice, one of the most visited cities in the world, has been battling the ill-effects of overtourism by imposing strict rules on visitors. An estimated 20 million people visit the city every year.
