(TAN): Greece has launched a new campaign for the 2020 travel season dubbed “Restart Tourism”, reports said. It is reportedly aimed at urging international tourists to visit Greece this year.

The country’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis reportedly introduced the campaign with a promotional video in Greece’s capital Athens earlier this week.

“We hope to be able to welcome visitors safely, first and foremost, and that this, the summer of 2020, will be a memorable one,” he was quoted by Ekathimerini as saying.

“Greece is more than just sea and sun. What we want to communicate is that Greek summer…is a state of mind,” he added.

In the short video, a voiceover begins by asking “What makes Greek summer so precious?”. It is not just the sea or the sun, but “more than that”. Greek summer is “a state of mind”, it is about “being with the people you love”, “connecting with nature” and “feeling free”. Tourists all over the world are encouraged to enjoy their Greek summer this year right where they are.

The southeastern European nation reportedly started lifting lockdown restrictions after it managed to keep COVID-19 deaths comparatively low by imposing strict and early measures. Data from Johns Hopkins University showed, Greece, a country of reportedly 10.72 million, has 2,952 cases of infection including 180 deaths.

According to reports, Prime Minister Mitsotakis said tourism has to be included in the gradual reopening since Greece depends heavily on the sector – the tourism industry accounts for 20% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product. However, he reportedly said “this summer will be different than what we planned” because of COVID-19.

“Tourists will come to a Greece that is the same but at the same time different. They will have to observe the basic hygiene protocols invariably. The protection of public health and the safety of visitors and workers in tourism remain our top non-negotiable priority. It is to our advantage that in the summer, we will be in open air, where specialists say that the possibilities of contagion are significantly reduced,” he was quoted by Anadolu Agency as saying.
