The botched safety test that resulted in the disaster in the then Soviet Ukraine was the worst nuclear accident the world had seen.

The five-episode HBO miniseries tells the story of the nuclear explosion’s aftermath, the cleanup operation and the subsequent inquiry.

While the World Health Organization puts the number of dead from the accident and its aftermath at 9,000, other studies have estimated that the number of deaths has been as high as between 100,000 and 200,000.
