(TAN): The International Air Transport Association (IATA) and the Aviation Impact Accelerator (AIA), based at the University of Cambridge, have announced a collaboration to expedite the aviation sector’s journey towards achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050, IATA said in a statement.

By assessing the financial implications and developing scenario-based tools, the partnership aims to assist airlines in analyzing and evaluating different decarbonization pathways. The ultimate goal is to enable better-informed decisions by both airlines and policy-makers as they navigate the transition to a sustainable future.

The AIA, comprised of a team of experts from various fields, has been working for the past three years to develop evidence-based tools that facilitate a deeper understanding of and a strategic approach to sustainable aviation. With their robust system modeling capability, AIA brings valuable insights to this collaboration. Meanwhile, IATA, known for fostering cooperation among stakeholders and driving industry change, is eager to combine forces with AIA to unlock transformative solutions.

“We are excited to launch this new collaboration between AIA and IATA, investigating realistic pathways for aviation’s transition to net-zero emissions by 2050. We believe that by bringing together IATA’s strong track record of cooperation and AIA’s unique modeling capability, we have an opportunity to unlock change,” said Rob Miller, director of the Whittle Laboratory, University of Cambridge, and AIA lead.

Marie Owens Thomsen, IATA’s SVP sustainability and chief economist, said, “We are delighted to join forces with the Aviation Impact Accelerator to enhance our understanding of the many potential pathways to achieve air transport’s sustainable future. Our collaboration will notably explore the intersection between different technological pathways, which will have an influence on the long-term outlook of our industry.”

In addition to their primary objectives, AIA and IATA plan to collaborate on the future development of IATA’s Recommended Practice Per-Passenger CO2 Calculation Methodology. This methodology, when used in conjunction with verified airline operational data, provides accurate calculation results and transparency regarding the carbon footprint associated with flying activities.

The collaboration between IATA and AIA holds the promise of driving substantial progress in the aviation industry’s efforts to reach net-zero CO2 emissions. By leveraging their respective expertise, these organizations aim to pave the way for a sustainable and environmentally responsible future of air travel.
