Mumbai (TAN): India’s Maharashtra state could soon kick off its seaplane project after the state government picked out two locations for the venture, reports said.

The two selected locations are the Khindsi Lake near Nagpur and Erai Dam at the industrial township Chandrapur. While the service to Khindsi Lake will help visitors who come to explore Ramtek, Nagpur, and the Pench tiger project in the state of Madhya Pradesh, that in Erai Dam will offer an airhead to Chandrapur, known for its power plants, coal mines and paper mills.

“We already have a seaplane policy and have asked our consultants to study the two sites at Chandrapur and Nagpur for their feasibility. Seaplanes require steady waters and cannot operate at sites where water levels deplete,” Suresh Kakani, Managing Director of Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), the main agency for the project, was quoted by DNA as saying.

He reportedly added MADC has partnered with Airports Authority of India to make assessments and that the report is expected to be delivered in a month. The body will then decide whether the project will be undertaken by the public or the private sector.

He also said apart from facilities enabling fixed-wing amphibious aircraft to take off and land in water, services such as a terminal building, jetty, ATC tower, and other infrastructure associated with seaplanes will be added at the two water aerodromes.
