(TAN): India has emerged as the top source market for tourist arrivals in the Maldives so far in 2021, overtaking the position previously held by Russia, according to an official statement.

The latest statistics published by the country’s tourism ministry indicates that as of February 17, Maldives welcomed 32,970 arrivals from India followed by 32,019 arrivals from Russia this year. Ukraine took the third position with 10,178 tourist arrivals. The remaining top source markets include Kazakhstan, Romania, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Czech Republic and the USA.

After temporarily closing the borders to curb the spread of Covid-19, Maldives reopened borders for all international travellers on July 15, 2020. While tourists are not required to quarantine upon arrival, tourists are required to submit an online health declaration form within 24 hours prior to departure and are required to produce a negative Covid-19 PCR test result conducted within 96 hours prior to departure.

The Maldives is one of the most ideal and safest locations for travellers right now as the islands are geographically blessed by its isolated nature. The rising number of incoming Indian travellers are largely influenced by Bollywood celebrities opting for vacations at high-end resorts and organically promoting the Maldives.
