Kochi (TAN): Kerala Tourism has launched the first phase of its ‘Barrier-free’ project that seeks to make tourist destinations of the state accessible to everyone, especially the differently-abled and the elderly.
The tourism department of this South Indian coastal state’s government will shortly start special tour packages for this purpose.
Kerala is the first state in India to implement UN World Tourism Organization’s call for ‘Tourism for All Promoting Universal Accessibility’, the state government said in a statement.

Special toilets, 261 ramps, 163 wheelchairs, 170 walking sticks, 159 crutches, and 958 signage are now in place in Kerala for the differently-abled.
“To make the tourist destinations barrier-free, we have now got Rs 90 million for 125 major destinations. All the 14 districts in Kerala have taken up projects and Alappuzha (or Alleppey) completed the work early this month,” Kerala Tourism director P. Bala Kiran had said in January.
