Cologne, Germany (TAN): Germany-based airline Lufthansa is launching a new platform that enables fliers to purchase sustainable aviation fuel to offset the carbon emissions produced by their flight.
Named ‘Compensaid’, the service will help replace fossil fuel with SAF, or Sustainable Aviation Fuel, which can cut down up to 80% of the emissions, the carrier claimed.
Managing Director Lufthansa Innovation Hub, Gleb Tritus said while flying connects people across the geographical and cultural boundaries, it also negatively impacts the climate. Each traveller, with the help of the platform could now find out and compensate for the climate effects their flight caused.

“Every individual traveler can take action: With “Compensaid,” we provide people with a tool that shows them the climate effects of their flights. This impact can be reduced significantly with the help of innovative technologies such as sustainable fuel,” he added.
Compensaid uses a tool to track flights across all airlines all over the world, and then provides passengers a detailed evaluation of their entire travel history, including flight distance, time, destinations, efficiency of the aircraft type, and associated carbon dioxide emissions.
After this, passengers can choose between two options. They can either replace fossil aviation fuels with SAF by paying the market-based surcharge in comparison to fossil kerosene or support a reforestation project in Nicaragua. For the former, while the surcharge paid by customers will be used to cover the individual kerosene consumption with SAF, the airline will pay the basic rate for the kerosene.

“Sustainable Aviation Fuel is a groundbreaking way to produce sustainable kerosene. We are delighted to support “Compensaid,” an innovative platform that for the first time enables customers to invest in CO2neutral fuel for their flights,” Thorsten Luft, Head of Fuel Management at Lufthansa Group said.
Swiss climate protection foundation myclimate was the first to collaborate with Compensaid. The Corporate Fuel Management of the Lufthansa Group will also work on the platform.
The first test version of Compensaid was launched earlier this month.
