(TAN): Peru President Martín Vizcarra has announced to restart international flights from October 5. Passengers are required to submit a negative Covid-19 test result taken 48 hours before entering the country, reports said.

President Vizcarra said that the first international flights will be between destinations that are “safe” in terms of the progress of the pandemic. “We are going to begin flights with neighboring countries in the region,” he said.

Earlier this month, Peruvian Minister of Transport and Communications Carlos said that Spain, US, Mexico, Chile, Brazil and Argentina may be the potential countries to resume operations after the closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic is lifted.

According to reports, the announcement was made after confirming that the number of persons infected and deceased by the pandemic has begun to decrease since August. The announcement by the president said that travellers with professional or business purpose will be allowed initially. For tourists, the Peruvian government will wait until the number of Covid-19 infections and deaths in the country drop further.

Peru has the third-highest number of Covid-19 cases in South America after Brazil and Columbia. However, in proportion to its population, Peru has the highest death rate from the pandemic in the world (98.68 deaths per 100,000 people), according to the ranking published by the Johns Hopkins University in the US.
