Restoration funds for 80-year-old black history museum in Georgia, US

Hiram, US (TAN): The Georgia Department of Economic Development has awarded the city of Hiram a grant to help restore the 80-year-old Hiram Rosenwald School Museum.

The museum was among 14 projects the Georgia state agency approved to encourage development of tourism destinations statewide.

The city of Hiram, part of the Paulding county in the state of Georgia, US, received a grant of more than USD 3,800 for renovation and restoration of the black history museum. 

Georgia is located immediately north of Florida is the southeastern part of the US.Georgia Tourism, a division of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, has announced a total of more thanUSD 64,000 for the Hiram project and 13 others in the state.

Residents of Paulding county have worked to restore the Hiram Rosenwald building and operate it as a black history museum and educational centre for almost two decades.

The building was one of about 5,000 schools nationwide built with donations from part-owner and leader of Sears, Roebuck and Company, Julius Rosenwald. He built the schools from the 1930s to the 1950s to provide black students in rural areas better educational facilities during the era of segregation in US public schools.

“We are thrilled to announce this new round of funding because these projects will create lasting economic growth for these communities by helping spur job creation, attract investment and provide residents with an improved quality of life,” West Georgia Neighbor quoted Kevin Langston, deputy commissioner for tourism at the Georgia Department of Economic Development, as saying.

Georgia Tourism offered the grant to communities that took part in the department’s Tourism Product Development Resource Team programme in an effort to support and encourage Georgia’s tourism entities to create new developments.

The Tourism Product Development Resource Team programme works to evaluate a community’s potential for tourism growth and development through innovative and unique experiences based on a community’s local culture and heritage, a news release said.

The recommendations and financial support provided through this funding programme is designed to spur tourism development activities at the local level that maintain and create jobs, attract tourists, and enhance the visitor experience, the release added.
