Tornado scare for UNESCO City of Literature Iowa City

Des Moines (TAN): A tornado touched down miles from Iowa City in United States’ Iowa state last evening.

Located in eastern Iowa, Iowa City is also known as a UNESCO City of Literature.

A twister was spotted around 1900 hours local time, following which Iowa residents were advised to seek shelter immediately. However, no injuries were reported. A tornado watch until midnight was put in place.

Pictures and videos on social media showed how the twister was taking shape, but faded out before it could cause serious damage.h

Iowa City is famous for the University of Iowa, and its museums – Museum of Natural History, and Stanley Museum of Art. The city also offers several other historical and natural attractions, some of the significant ones being the Devonian Fossil Gorge, Lake Macbride State Park, Plum Grove Historic House, and the Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area.

Visitors can choose from a huge range of stays here, including the Heartland Inn, Graduate Iowa City, Coralville Marriott Hotel &Conference Center, and Historic Phillips House. Outdoor enthusiasts can set up a camp in one of the parks or campsites – Coralville Lake and Devonian Fossil Gorge, and Sleepy Hollow RV Park and Campground, among others.

Last year, five major events alone attracted nearly 58,000 visitors to the city.
