(TAN): Tourism Fiji has launched a new domestic tourism initiative called the “Local Event Fund,” which is available for any Fiji-based tourism business that would like to further expand into the domestic market.

The fund, which is being implemented in partnership with the Australian government’s Market Development Facility (MDF), complements Tourism Fiji’s  “Love Our Locals Fiji” campaign by giving local event organizers an avenue to apply for funding for events that target the domestic market.

Tourism Fiji Events Manager Chad Eastgate said, “The Local Event Fund will support both new and existing events. There are a few criteria that event organisers need to meet such as the event has to be owned and operated by a registered Fijian business and it must attract a minimum of 40 guests.”

“It provides an opportunity for organisers to get creative with their event concepts, encouraging the use of local performers and activity providers to maximise attendance,” he said.

The fund aims to provide support for the growth of Fiji’s domestic tourism industry by encouraging domestic tourism travel and spending in local destinations.

“MDF is delighted to support this Tourism Fiji initiative to promote domestic tourism. These local tourism events will help keep our tourism staff in work and create new livelihood opportunities for our local performers,” said MDF Fiji Country Director Malcolm Bossley.

Event organisers are encouraged to discuss their proposals with the team at Tourism Fiji prior to applying, to better understand the process. Applications can be submitted for events that are being planned for this year until June 2021.
