Harare (TAN): A tourist possessing a Polish passport has drowned in the Zambezi river near the world-famous Victoria Falls where he apparently went swimming without a life jacket, the South African news website TimesLive reported.
Ofer Cohen, 34, whose lifeless body was found floating in a gorge, had entered Zimbabwe through the Victoria Falls Airport last week.
According to the report, police suspect Cohen had gone swimming under the Victoria Falls Bridge Rapid No. 1 without a life jacket.
Swimming is prohibited in the Zambezi river because of the dangerous currents and the presence of hippos and crocodiles.
Cohen body was found downstream near Rapid No. 4.
The friend with whom Cohen was staying had reported him missing on Tuesday. Cohen had left for an evening stroll on Sunday and never returned.
“He drove from home on Sunday to have a sunset view of the rainforest and later went down the river for a photoshoot. That’s when he decided to swim without a life jacket. We looked for him on Monday and saw the car parked near the rainforest, and on Tuesday saw his clothes on the edge of the river, near the water,” said Newbey, Cohen’s friend.
Police are investigating the case to find out the exact circumstances in which Cohen drowned.
