(TAN): In a move aimed at enhancing border security, the United Kingdom has announced the implementation of a new requirement for visa-free travellers to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before entering the country. The ETA scheme, set to commence in November 2023, will gradually be introduced for visitors from various countries over the next two years, Visit Scotland said.
The ETA will serve as a digital permission to travel and will be mandatory for most visitors to the UK who do not require a visa for stays shorter than six months and have no prior immigration status. This new requirement, however, does not alter the existing entry criteria into the country.

Under the ETA scheme, travellers will need to pay a fee of GBP 10 (USD 13) per applicant. The ETA will grant permission for multiple trips and remain valid for a period of two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. This streamlined approach aims to facilitate ease of travel while maintaining stringent security measures.
Effective from November 15, 2023, nationals of Qatar planning to travel to the UK will be required to obtain an ETA, with applications open for submission starting from October 25. Subsequently, beginning February 22, 2024, visitors from Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates will also need to acquire an ETA before travelling to the UK.
The UK government plans to implement the ETA scheme in a phased manner, rolling it out based on nationality over the next two years.
