US: 9 dead, 26 hurt in mass shootout at aviation birthplace Dayton, Ohio; second shootout in 24 hours

Dayton, US (TAN): Nine people were killed in this Ohio city in the second mass shootout in the US in 24 hours.

Dayton is the birthplace of aviation in the sense it’s the place where Orville and Wilbur Wright perfected the design for the first practical aircraft.

Police said the shooting began at 0100 hours at Oregon Historic District, a popular nightlife destination. The shooter has been killed.

Dayton mayor Nan Whaley said police officers neutralized the shooter in less than a minute. But by then nine people were dead and 26 injured.

On Saturday morning, at least 20 people were killed and 26 others injured when a gunman shot at will at a Walmart departmental store in El Paso on the US-Mexico border, known as a melting point of Mexican and American culture.

The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Patrick Crusius from Allen, a suburb near Dallas, has surrendered to police.

US President Donald Trump tweeted, “The FBI, local and state law enforcement are working together in El Paso and in Dayton, Ohio. Information is rapidly being accumulated in Dayton. Much has already be learned in El Paso.”

The recent shootouts will encourage gun control activists in the US to push for reforms.
