Los Angeles (TAN): Norwegian Air has collaborated with Portugal-based technology company Vision-Box to launch facial boarding technology at United States’ Los Angeles Airport.
The carrier’s first flight that used the technology departed Los Angeles for Spanish city Barcelona earlier this month. Over 500,000 international passengers have already used the service for paperless boarding at Los Angeles, the carrier said.

“Norwegian thrives on innovation and sustainability. We’ve been named the ‘most fuel-efficient’ airline twice by the International Council on Clean Transportation and reducing our carbon footprint and sustainability matter to us. Adopting paperless boarding with biometric technology is the right step for our environment, and will create a seamless passenger experience, which will also attract more eco-conscious consumers to our airline,” Managing Director Support Services at Norwegian Air, Bjørn Erik Barman-Jenssen, said.
While the airline became the tenth airline to implement the contactless biometric self-boarding service at Los Angeles Airport, it was the ‘first low-cost, long-haul carrier’ to do so at the airport, Norwegian Air claimed. The other airlines to provide the solution include Air France, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, KLM, Korean Air, Lufthansa, Qantas and Singapore Airlines.

How the facial boarding technology works
A biometric-enabled camera at the self-boarding eGate captures a passenger’s facial image as they reach an eGate, which is then sent to the Traveler Verification Service of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection for a match with the stored digital information. Once the match is confirmed, the system signals the eGate to open its doors so the passenger can board their flight.
