US tourism economy likely to exceed 2019 peak this year, says WTTC

(TAN): The US travel and tourism sector is expected to exceed the 2019 peak. this year, says the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC)’s 2023 Economic Impact Research.

The sector is set to contribute USD 2.24 trillion to the US economy this year, surpassing 2019’s USD 2.17 trillion, WTTC said. As many as 1.2 million jobs are expected to be created in the sector this year.

WTTC President and CEO Julia Simpson said: “The travel & tourism sector in the US is recovering strongly with strong visitor demand. This year we expect tourism to add more than USD 2.2 trillion to the U.S. economy, beating the all-time high of 2019…. International visitor spend is still lagging and despite the recent surge, we are still lagging 25% behind 2019 levels.”

“The US remains the world’s biggest travel & tourism market although predictions show China will take that crown in 2032,” she added.
