Scarborough, Tobago (TAN): Gun violence has cast a shadow over tourism in Tobago and legislators are urging the local people to be responsible citizens. The tourism industry lies at the very backbone of Tobago’s economy, as it employs much of the population here.

“The law-abiding right-thinking people including parents, teachers, clergy and the media have to deal directly with and confront bad behaviour at its source rather than focus on the peripheral issues after the bad behaviour that very often cost us lives and lead to rape and robbery,” minister in the office of the attorney -general Fitzgerald Hinds told the Daily Express.

Guns travel to Tobago, an autonomous island within the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, from nearby countries including the United Sates and Brazil.

“Look at what is going in Tobago with the tourists. They are attacking the tourists and every time they do that they put a major blemish on the entire industry which now will not be able to employ their mothers, their aunt, their girlfriend and so on. If tourism dies in Tobago, Tobago dies,” Hinds said.

Just 10 days ago, a couple from the UK were robbed at gun point in Plymouth. This was the second such incident to occur on the island in just four days.

The assailant, who escaped on foot, robbed them of USD 60, a Canon camera and GBP 106.

The couple were guests at the Blue Waters Inn Hotel in Speyside and exploring the western part of the island when they were attacked.
