Scarborough, Tobago (TAN): A new air connection to Tobago has pushed up tourist arrivals by 5.2 per cent in January 2019 as compared to the previous month, Caribbean Journal said, citing a statement by local tourism officials.

Leisure carrier Sunwing Airlines in December 2018 started a weekly service to Tobago from Toronto and has since brought 1,399 passengers to the ANR Robinson International Airport here on its 189-seater Boeing 737.

The flight, in its last four trips between January 1 and February 21, saw over 90 per cent seat occupancy. The report, citing Sunwing figures, said the average seat occupancy on this route since the beginning has been 74 per cent.

The Sunwing passengers contributed to a 5.2 per cent month-on-month rise in the number of tourist arrivals to Tobago.

In a strategic alliance with Rex Resorts, Sunwing recently introduced its Starfish hotel brand in Tobago, the report added.
