Kuala Lumpur, Mar 17 (IBNS): Once a small fishing village littered with garbage, Pulau Aman island in Malaysia’s Penang state now wears a clean and beautiful look.

According to a report in The Star Online, this was made possible by a clean-up project taken up by the Seberang Prai Municipal Council.

Pulau Aman and its neighbouring Pulau Gedung island have both been cleaned up under the initiative.

Council president Datuk Rozali Mohamud said 11 people had been contracted under the project.

“Five workers do the cleaning up while three others take care of the garbage disposals. One worker is assigned to cut the grass, while another to clean the public toilets at the campsite, near the floating restaurant and at the Telaga Emas well. They also tasked one worker to look after Pulau Gedung,” the report quoted Rozali as saying.

Pulau Aman has a population of 280. Several households benefit from the tourism business.

The island has a hill for visitors to hike up. They can also set up tents by the beach and go kayaking in the calm waters between Pulau Aman and Pulau Gedung. Bicycles and electric scooters are also available on rent, says the report, adding that a trip around the small island could take between 15 and 30 minutes.

Pulau Aman is a boat ride away from the Gua Musang jetty in Batu Kawan town of South Seberang Perai district in Penang.
