Perth (TAN): The Western Australia government has decided to include AUD 10 million in the state budget to create over 180-km high-quality mountain bike and bushwalking trails in Collie, located around two hours south of Perth.

Part of the plans are a “65-km epic” mountain bike trail network in Wellington National Park that intends to attract visitors from all over the world. This is part of the government’s plans to market Collie as the state’s “trail adventure town”.

“The trails will challenge all levels of cyclists,” a government statement said.

A hundred kilometres of high-quality mountain bike trails will be created through the river valley between Wellington National Park and the town. These include:

  • 65 km of world-class ‘epic’ trails in the Wellington National Park
  • 35 km of trails in the Westralia Conservation Park on the town outskirts
  • A further 11 km of trail in Arklow forest block
  • The realignment of 20km of the Munda Biddi cycle trail through the town
  • Completion of the 72km, five-day Wiilman Bilya walk trail around Wellington Dam from Collie around the Wellington National Park
  • Infrastructure investment to establish a trail centre in the town centre and secondary trails hubs at Wellington Dam kiosk and Westralia (including a Collie river crossing)

“Collie will become Western Australia’s premier trail adventure town, and this AUD 10 million commitment will see it become a world-class destination for mountain bike riders and bushwalkers,” Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan said. “We expect visitors will come from all over WA and beyond to use these facilities. It will create jobs for locals and deliver a boost to the local economy.”

McGowan said all the trails were focussed around Collie so that the visitors stay in the town and help the local economy grow.

“Collie is already well-known for its adventure camping, water skiing and outdoor activities, and my government is keen to build on this reputation to create a hub for adventure sports,” he added.
