China: Shanghai to keep cultural attractions open at night to boost tourism

Beijing (TAN): Chinese city Shanghai has released a list of tourist attractions and cultural sites that will remain open till late at night, as part of the city’s effort to provide its residents better access to recreation and its nighttime economy a push.

According to reports, the list consists of 105 scenic spots, art galleries, parks, museums, bookstores, and cultural complexes across the city. Shanghai’s municipal culture and tourism bureau reportedly said the move was taken after demand for nighttime leisure grew from both residents and visitors from all over the world.

Shanghai Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Wildlife Park and Shanghai Happy Valley have introduced late shows or night-tours into their itineraries, while Shanghai Ocean Aquarium and Shanghai Jinjiang Action Park have extended their business hours.

Museum enthusiasts will now be able to visit Shanghai Museum and the Shanghai Natural History Museum at night to experience their special nighttime exhibitions and lectures. Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai (MoCA) and World Expo Museum and Shanghai History Museum will also be open at night, reports said. The Shanghai Museum in Huangpu District will reportedly host lectures and cultural activities at night, the Shanghai Museum of Glass will arrange lectures and psychodramas, while the Shanghai Film Museum and Shanghai Meteorological Museum will host museum magic night tours.

Visitors will be able to book most of the nighttime activities online to keep a check on the number of participants and ensure safety.

Several authorities in the city shared a guideline to promote Shanghai’s night economy earlier this year.
