(TAN): The Reggia di Caserta, or Royal Palace of Caserta, has banned horse-drawn carriages on its premises. The move comes after a horse died while pulling a carriage full of tourists under the summer sun, The Local reported.

Royal Palace of Caserta is a popular tourist attraction in south Italy. “The horse-drawn carriage service at Reggio di Caserta has ceased,” the report quoted a statement issued by the palace after the horse collapsed around midday on August 12.

Visitors will now get to travel around the palace in electric golf buggy-style vehicles.

Animal rights activists have slammed the palace, saying the horse was “killed by heat and fatigue” though veterinarians said this has not yet been confirmed by post-mortem.
