(TAN): Japan Airlines is giving away 50,000 free round-trip domestic tickets to foreign tourists this summer.

The Japanese airline’s ‘Win a Trip with JAL’ campaign, scheduled to open later this month, will fly passengers to regional destinations between July 1 and September 30 this year, as per reports. The free tickets will reportedly provide foreign travellers with an opportunity to explore the country during the Summer Olympics that is set to be held in Japan’s capital Tokyo from July 24 to August 9.

Each passenger will be given four destinations to choose from, with JAL informing passengers which one they will go to within three days of submitting an application.

The flights will take off from and or return to Tokyo Haneda Airport, or Itami or Kansai Airports in Osaka.

Each applicant can apply as a group of a maximum of four people, and will be able to choose from three or five departure or arrival time slots.

The campaign is only open to passengers living outside of Japan – they must either have a passport issued by a country other than Japan, or be a Japanese passport holder with permanent residence in a different country.

Passengers could be asked to show proof of visit to Japan during the specified period. Also, the airline may not show any destination as number of seats are limited.

The promotion is only available for JAL Mileage Bank members who are not registered in Japan.

According to reports, the campaign is part of the Your Japan 2020 Campaign that will be rolled out by the Japan Tourism Agency and the Japan National Tourism Organization.

Japan could reportedly see a tourism rush this summer owing to the Tokyo Olympic Games. This will be Tokyo’s second year as a Summer Olympics host.
