Barcelona (TAN): The pressure of tourism has resulted in a decrease in the resident population of the city, Euronews said.

Barcelona, one of the world’s most visited cities, sees around 20 million tourists a year. The Catalan capital, however, has a resident population of only 1.6 million.

According to the report, the resident population at the city centre has decreased by as much as 11 per cent in the past four years with more apartments being rented out to visitors.

The city administration is trying to maintain a balance between both side by appointing mediators to sort out issues between residents and those renting out their apartments.

Local residents mostly complain about late night parties in certain areas.
