(TAN):Utah’s Moab Area Travel Council (MATC) has become a destination member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).

GSTC, a nonprofit based in the United States, acts as the global body to help develop knowledge and understanding of sustainable tourism practices, encourage the implementation of universal sustainable tourism principles, and create demand for sustainable travel.

The MATC, located in the United States’ Utah state, promotes, markets, and backs tourism and events in a way that protects the natural environment to improve the local economy.

Executive Director of MATC, Elaine Gizler, said that the Moab community, that functions based on sustainability, will soon become an example for its sustainable approach in the country.

“By 2025 the MATC will be the model in the United States of America for implementing sustainable tourism using the Global Sustainable Tourism Council Criteria. We will be recognized for promoting accessibility and produce educational materials that demonstrate positive changes in the preservation of our lands,” Gizler added.

Destinations practicing sustainability in development and management of tourism are encouraged by GSTC to join the body as a member and apply the GSTC Destination Criteria. This can result in receiving a certification from a certification body accredited by GSTC.

Moab, a city in eastern Utah, is a gateway to Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park.
